Got the green light from the wife to head up to the mountains last Sunday, so we pointed the Explorer west up 285 to the South Platte below Spinney Mountain Reservoir to see if any of those monster lake run Rainbows had found their way up the river from Eleven Mile. It was a perfect day to get back on the water, with clear blue skies and very little wind to speak of. The flows were a little bit low for the big migration of fish that gives this river its name, but we found the resident fish more than willing to take a fly, and a few of the really big trout that have started to move up into the river in anticipation of their annual spawn.<br />
<br />
The fish were taking small annelid and black midge patterns with abandon, as we brought tons of fish to the net. It was the best day of fishing that I've ever been a part of on the Dream Stream, as any good drift would draw a strike. My pops took top honors yet again (becoming too regular), hooking an awesome Spinney Rainbow on a San Juan Worm in a nice run below the bridge. He wrestled the fish out of the deep hole where he was hiding, and got the fish into the net. It truly was an impressive fish, measuring out at a very thick bodied 25". Felt great to be back out in the water again my Dad, especially with the amount of time we spent with our rods bent. First day on the water this year, and hopefully it is an omen of good times ahead on the rivers.<br />

Enjoyed a nice fall day up in the hills yesterday, meeting some buddies in Middle Park to fish the Willy's Fork of the Colorado River. Left the house early, so it wasn't until after I turned north on Highway 9 before the sun started to come up over the foggy hills above the Blue River. Headed north past Green Mountain Reservoir, and made my way down into Kremmling before turning back east towards Parshall, and the Williams Fork River.<br />
<br />
While not a big river by any means, the Williams Fork was absolutely stunning, with golden Aspen leaves lining the entire river from the dam all the way down to the Confluence with the Colorado River. The fishing was not on fire, but we were able to keep our rods consistently bent, catching many of the rivers wild trout. The Willy truly is one of the states best brown trout fisheries. It's a shame that I never was able to fish the river before Whirling Disease devastated the population of Rainbow Trout, but I am glad that the Rainbows left in the river are big!<br />

I did hook into a few of the big fish, but my rust from a summer of not many fishing outings left with the fish coming unbuttoned. Biggest rush of the day was getting my pheasant tail whacked in the riffle above the confluence to the Raddy, watching the big bow go airborne before screaming all the way across the river. Felt awesome to feel a big fish pulling on the other end of my new Blue Halo, and had the fish under control before the hook worked itself loose and the fish was gone. It's true that the fish that got away are the reason that you come back.<br />

Was able to help a fellow angler out landing, and snapping a few pics of beautiful 22" bow that took a maroon San Juan Worm. I was stoked to be a part of another fly fisherman's biggest fish of the year, and feel the camaraderie amongst anglers that we share in this beautiful state of ours. Everyone on the water, enjoying a perfect fall Colorado day on the Williams Fork, trying to fool some fish.<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GqVbEh9VPoE/Vf8NnMizaZI/AAAAAAAAB6g/O9papulgt2s/s1600/IMG_2009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GqVbEh9VPoE/Vf8NnMizaZI/AAAAAAAAB6g/O9papulgt2s/s320/IMG_2009.JPG" width="320" /></a>Everything you read these days about the Blue River is that it is no longer in the elite class of the other Colorado Gold Medal waters, and while I tend to agree with this, I still really enjoy fishing this river. It's a very unique fishery as it flows through the Silverthorne Outlet Mall, and there are people everywhere watching you fish. Definitely does not give you the solitude that can be found on other water around the state, but even though the stream may not be in the Gold Medal class, there are still plenty of educated fish that test the skills of any fly fisherman.<br />
<br />
Felt really good to get back into the waders, and enjoy the quickly changing Colorado seasons. Life has been moving at the speed of light since Brody was born, and it felt good to get out and focus on fly fishing for a few hours. The morning started out great, hooking a little Brown on my very first drift. While the Blue might not be sustaining the trout life like it once did, it still is producing some wild fish, as I was able to hook into a number of small Browns throughout the day. Hopefully the river is healthy enough that these little guys will be able to hold on and grow into the giant Mysis eating fish that the Blue is known for.<br />
<br />
Best part of the day was being able to use my new Blue Halo fiberglass rod. So fun hooking into fish with these glass rods. The fish feel so much bigger than they are, yet they still have the backbone when you do hook a larger fish and need to lean into it to turn their heads. So excited to add this rod to the quiver, and jump on the glass train.<br />

There are some very important milestones that a young boy will have in his first year; first giggle, first tooth, first word, and first steps. I also think we reached an equally important milestone this past weekend. I'll let the picture do the explaining.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Added a couple new experiences this past weekend to the old belt; fly fishing from a raft on one of the most famous stretches of river in the world and trying to catch the mystical Colorado River salmonfly hatch.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of my buddies just pulled the trigger on a sweet raft outfitted with a fishing frame, giving us the capability to start exploring different waters than we are used to, starting with the Colorado River from State Bridge to Catamount. I have traditionally been a wade angler, carrying my large pack full of flies around my shoulder, and exploring our local waters on foot. While I will always love this style of fishing, it will be a complete new experience learning how to catch fish from a boat. Even though I was a little apprehensive, I had the opportunity to get on the sticks for a few hours and start learning how to maneuver a boat down a river. It really is a team environment from the raft, because if the rower doesn't get the raft into the correct run, the anglers just float down the river missing all of the fishy water. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We had heard the Salmonflies had hatched on the Upper Colorado, and we were stoked to be heading up with the chance of catching this short lived hatch. While we saw lots of the bugs flying around the river, and lots in the water, the river was just too high and dirty for the fishing to turn onto that epic level. With a float that typically takes 7 hours, we flew down the river and got to the takeout 14 miles later at Catamount in just under 5. Pretty crazy seeing and hearing these massive insects fly around the river, and can only imagine how crazy awesome it would be to see the all of the fish in the river take notice and start gorging themselves on them. Now with this boat, there will be more chances to do this kind of thing in the future, and really use it to see some beautiful areas of the state and chase some pretty fish.</div>

Woke up bright and early this morning, and spent an absolutely perfect Colorado morning on the pond, re-learning how to cast and feeling that sweet bend of the rod. Felt great to be out in the water, and felt even better to feel some nice Pike smack your fly. Looking forward to more time on the water in the coming months, and really anticipating when the little guy can start coming with me on the water. Perfect way to spend a nice Saturday morning off from work!<br />

Sorry for the lack of blog activity over the last couple months, as the fishing part of my life has taken a backseat as my wife and I got ready to welcome the newest fisherman to the family, Brody Thomas. Ahhh....that's better! Finally found a free day from work to hit up the local ditch with my Pops, making our way up to see how the South Platte was running on an absolutely perfect Colorado winter day. Spent the morning shaking off the rust while searching for fish in the holes around Bridge Crossing, and looking through my deplenished pack for the perfect midge. Felt great to get back into the waders, and feel that tug at the end of the line. With my life about to change in a big way here in about 7 weeks, not sure how much time I'm going to have a fly rod in my hand this year, so I need to enjoy every minute that I am able to sneak away.<br />
<br />
The river looked great as usual, with many nice, healthy fish spotted. Even with the Fly Fishing Show going strong down in Denver, the river was packed full of anglers, looking to get out and enjoy a perfect January day. Although the fishing wasn't on fire, we managed to bring some fish to the net and enjoy the area around Deckers for the morning before heading back to Denver.<br />

After starting out the year with a bang, the end of 2014 has been a big dud on the fly fishing front. This is the longest that I've gone without having the rod in my hand since I first picked up fly fishing 5 years ago. With my very challenging (aka stressful, terrible, worst ever, etc.) construction project just about to come to an end, I know that brighter days are ahead, filled with leaping rainbows and monster browns ( I can hope, right?). I spend my days dreaming of the water, and reflecting on some of the amazing experiences that I had this year, spending time with my fishing buddies and catching some pretty amazing fish. I have never had withdrawals like this in my entire life, and I need something to make this feeling go away.<br />
<br />
With the end of the year fast approaching, I would like to extend a very Happy Holidays to all my fellow fly fishermen. May Santa bring you all new Scott Radians and Fishpond packs this Christmas. I would like to close out this year with a few of my favorite photos from the year. It are moments like these that come to mind, and make me excited for when life slows down a little bit, and allows for more time on the water. <br />

Continued on our journey towards Steamboat and the Yampa River below Stagecoach Reservoir. I've fished the Yampa through the town of Steamboat and below town on some private ranches with great success, so I was really excited to fish another section of this incredible river. Without a doubt, the river through Stagecoach State Park is one of the prettiest sections of river in the entire state. There is nice trout water holding some very large, very tough fish. I would have to say that this river requires the same techniques that we use on another famous tailwater: the San Juan. 6X tippet with miniscule flies were needed to draw very subtle strikes, with annelids and midge the majority of the fishes source of food.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really enjoyed to continue to fish the Blue Halo glass rod. After fishing mostly graphite rods for the last couple years, it is such a different feeling to use a slower rod, forcing you to slow down all aspects of your fishing. When you get a fish on the line, it really enhances the connection you feel to the fish, as you can feel every powerful run and head shake with the sensitive tip. I need to figure out what color and I'm going to order, and the rod will be making its way from the Blue Halo guys in Salt Lake City. I'm so pumped up to add this amazing fly rod to my arsenal and continue to fish it across the west.</div>

With every trip, they come to close, and it's time to point the Jeep back home. This was a great little trip with my Dad, fishing some new water and catching some nice fish. This trip also continued an ongoing trend that I hope to put to an end soon; my Dad catching the biggest fish of the trip.</div>

After catching a few pike early last week, it was time to head up into the mountains to catch my first love: trout. I left Denver bright and early to beat all of the rush hour traffic, and almost felt sorry for the people out there heading to work. Almost. Pulled into Silverthorne just as the sun was coming up. I love early mornings on the river, stringing up your rod and pulling your waders on, with the anticipation of the day ahead of you. You never know if you'll catch the fish of a lifetime, or on the other hand, not catch a fish at all.<br />
<br />
Big shout out to Cameron Mortenson (<a href="http://thefiberglassmanifesto.blogspot.com/">The Fiberglass Manifesto</a>) for hooking me up with a brand new <a href="http://www.bluehalostore.com/">Blue Halo</a> fiberglass fly rod as part of his rod demo program. I've been looking at these rods for the last couple of months on the internet, and was super excited to find the 5 wt in my hands just days before I was to head out for this trip. I had casted this thing on my lawn and really liked the feel, and thought it would be just perfect for playing some Blue River monsters on 6X.<br />
<br />
Started the day up by the dam, sight fishing to fish in every pool. With the higher flows all summer, it appears that the fish have been feeding heavily on Mysis Shrimp. There were fat and healthy fish everywhere, and they were feeding hard. I wasn't sure how the softer glass rod would perform with a nymph rig compared to my graphite rods, and I was thrilled to find this rod more than capable to do pretty much anything I wanted. Roll casting this rod was my favorite part, as it was effortless to cast the flies wherever I wanted them to go. Ultimate test was hooking some big trout, and I just loved the feeling of this rod bending over when a big trout was on the line. Even though the rod was softer, it had more than enough backbone to corral in some big fish, and with the supple tip, you knew the fragile tippet was going to be protected throughout the fight.<br />
<br />
After spending the day fishing by myself all through town, I was eager for my Dad to make the drive up the hill and meet me. We had decided to fish some new water, and were headed out of town to see what kind of fish we could find. More about the trip in the next post.<br />

I have the rest of the week off to chase trout in the mountains, so I started my time off by chasing some toothy critters at the Arsenal this morning. The best feeling in fly fishing is having a large Pike inhale your fly, and listening to your rod hum as it takes off like a torpedo. Was able to land three this morning before the lake turned off, giving me the rest of the day to prepare for what is in store the rest of the week. Gonna load up the Jeep and head west, fishing new water and hopefully catching some nice fish.<br />

Felt great to get up into the mountains yesterday for some fishing and camping with my buddy Mikey and his dog Jackson. With both of our schedules so hectic this year, time on the water has been hard to come by, but we made up for it yesterday by hitting up two of the most famous rivers in Colorado: the Arkansas and the Taylor.<br />
<br />
We headed up highway 285 around 10 AM, with plans to hit up the Arkansas above Buena Vista for a few hours before heading over Cottonwood Pass to set up camp, and fish the Taylor. I had never fished the Arkansas, and was super excited to see what this Gold Medal Water was all about. We fished above Buena Vista near the Railroad Bridge access. Between the large amount of whitewater enthusiasts braving the rapids, we were able to get some of the rivers famous Brown trout to take our flies. <br />

After stopping in Buena Vista to load up on camping food, we made the incredible drive over Cottonwood Pass into the Taylor Park Reservoir Valley. I have lived in Colorado my entire life, but there are still some areas in this state that will always take my breath away no matter how many times you see them. Being the 2nd highest pass in the state at 12,126 feet, this amazing 30 mile drive takes you up on the Chaffee County side to the summit, and then down the Gunnison County side into Taylor Park Reservoir. There are views of a number of the states famous 14er's, and provides absolutely breathtaking views on the entire trip.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After finding a campsite that overlooked the Reservoir, Mikey went to work cooking a feast over the campfire while I started to string up the rods in anticipation of the Taylor River later that night. Ribeye steaks with grilled portobello mushrooms, fried potatoes with onions, jalapenos, and ranchero beans, and Stone IPA made the meal perfect, while lounging around, watching Jackson play, and soaking in the great views.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">After cleaning up the mess, we loaded up the truck to go hog hunting on the Taylor. If you've never night fished on the Taylor, this is something that you have to do. It is absolutely nutty, with literally thousands of fish coming out to feed with reckless abandon all night. For some reason they do not spook at all, which allows you to get right on top of them with your headlamp. All it takes is a good drift, and you watch the mouth open to take your bug. Mikey took top honors for the night, landing a massive 20"+ fish to end the night.</span></div>

With the summer quickly slipping away, I spent a much needed day fly fishing the Eagle River in the Vail Valley last Friday. One of my buddies is getting married in a few weeks, so he wanted to head up early and pick up the fly rod for the first time. We spent the morning in our rain jackets, as the storm clouds kept the rain coming and slowly turning the river to chocolate milk. We still were able to hook some feisty Eagle River trout on large, flashy flies that kept it exciting. At about noon, the storms cleared and the bugs started to move around in the river. We moved up to a pull off closer to town, and continued to catch fish as the rest of our group started to show up. Finished off the day by drinking some cold ones stream side, just as the caddis started to pop off the water. It was a perfect way to start the weekend.<br />

The 50+ hour work weeks have really taken a toll on my fishing time this summer, but I was finally able to get out with my Dad yesterday, heading up to South Park to fish the Dream Stream. With life flying by at such a crazy speed, it's good to have days like this to slow down the pace and really enjoy the river. The South Platte was flowing at a perfect 294, which is an awesome rate for this river and allows for the fish to spread out, meaning you can catch fish everywhere. The river looked absolutely perfect, with bugs popping all day long, massive swarms of PMD's and Caddis flying everywhere and really getting the fishes attention all day long.<br />
<br />
What made yesterday special was watching my Dad catch his biggest trout yet. A beautiful Snake River Cutthroat that ate a Prince Nymph in a long slow run up by the dam right before we turned around and headed for the car. Almost botched the photo, but we lucked out and were able to get some stunning photos of this awesome fish. A perfect way to end the day in South Park, catching a monster fish on the Dream Stream.<br />

Well I think I have a new addiction! Catching big, nasty Pike on a fly rod is a total rush. These things are mean and just absolutely crush the fly. I guess what they say is true, THE TUG IS THE DRUG! My body is feeling it today after throwing big meaty flies all weekend, but what an awesome weekend of catching Pike it was!<br />

<br />
Sometimes you just need a day of solitude on the river to get your mind back in the right place, and yesterday was exactly what I needed to relax and unwind. I've been working some super long hours at work the last couple months with no end in sight, but that didn't stop me from starting my Memorial Day weekend early, hiking into upper Cheesman Canyon to catch some pretty fish. Arrived at the trail head early, and enjoyed the long walk up and finally down into the Canyon. One of the most breathtaking views in Colorado is when you finally round the ridge and see the Dam and Reservoir together. To see the effects of the Hayman Fire in the background, with nothing but barren Earth, makes you appreciate the destructive forces of nature. Luckily, the waters and surrounding canyon walls were spared for the most part, leaving us the Wild Trout Waters of Cheesman Canyon as an oasis in the middle of the fires path.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The flows on the South Platte below Cheesman have been a roller coaster over the last few weeks, going up and down like a yo-yo. Flows as high as 400 CFS have been seen in Deckers, but the flows were down around 120 CFS yesterday, allowing for some easier access to fish the pools in the Upper Canyon. The higher flows of the last few weeks have dislodged more worms and scuds into the water, and the Canyons trout have really taken notice. I fished multiple worm patterns for the majority of the day, with the classic chenille San Juan Worm taking the most and biggest fish. There was a midge hatch in the morning that got the fishes attention for about an hour, and a fairly strong baetis hatch in the early afternoon that switched the fish over to BWO nymphs for a while, but the worms were the ticket for explosive nymphing throughout the day. I have caught trout on many rivers throughout the West, and I have to say that the trout in Cheesman are the prettiest fish there are. Wild rainbows with dark red stripes down their sides, and Leopard spotted fish make the tough hike in worth all the effort.</div>

After the 1-hour hike up Heart Attack Hill and back down to the trail head, I enjoyed a leisurely drive down the South Fork to the confluence with the North Fork. We have just made a much needed upgrade to the camera, but I was too scared to take into the Canyon without a water proof case, so I used the drive to test out how the camera took some pictures, and I am very happy with how they came out. Sure, the pictures are going to be great when the scenery you're taking pictures of is so beautiful.</div>

Every once in a while, the day is just perfect. The fish are right where they should be, feeding exactly the way you think they should. It doesn't happen nearly as much as you want it to, but when it does, you have one of those special days that happens only a few times a year.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After working all night Thursday, I went home and got a few hours of sleep before making the drive up to Deckers. I didn't get to the river until 11, and was greeted with anglers everywhere taking advantage of the perfect spring weather. Pulled into the Bridge Crossing parking lot and and starting watching the beautiful sight of of bugs flying over the water while I rigged up. There were fishermen in my favorite run above the Bridge Crossing bridge, so I decided to fish my way around the parking area, which was free of any anglers. You just know the day is going to be awesome when you are mid drift on your first cast, and a nice South Platte trout just whacks your PT nymph! Kept heading around the bend, hooking fish in every spot that they should be.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A little farther downstream, I came to a perfect shelf where the water spilled over into a nice deep pool. Looking into the pool, I could see suspended trout just waiting for bugs to come over the shelf into their waiting mouths. The exact sight you want to see what you're on the river. I moved my indicator up to keep my nymphs at the depth of the suspended fish, and proceeded to have some of the best fishing I ever have at Deckers. At first, the trout were feeding with abandon on midge emergers and then they switched over to baetis nymphs as the afternoon rolled on. The three fly rig of a Hare's Ear, Mercury Black Beauty, and Mercury PT was all that was needed to keep hooked up all day. The pool kept loading itself the whole day, even after I hooked lots of the fish. The fish would move up to the shelf from the long pool below. Fish of the day was a very healthy South Platte brownie that I watched eat my olive RS2, and proceed to give me the best fight of the day.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's days like this that fly fishermen hope for, it's what we think about on every drive up the river, and it's exactly what I needed.</div>

Spring is coming and the fisherman hatch is on in full force! I've been fishing the Deckers stretch of the South Platte for a few years now, and I've never seen the amount of cars fill up every parking area and pull off through Deckers. We fished Bridge Crossing in the morning, which only yielded a few fish. Bridge Crossing is an absolutely amazing stretch of water that looks similar to the water up above in Cheesman Canyon. Moved up above the Deckers bridge around noon, and somehow found Midge Pool free from any anglers. Large fish were everywhere from the riffles up above into the run below, which allowed us to sight fish to these tough trout. Fooled 4 over the next 45 minutes before we had to head back to Denver. The fish were feeding with abandon on both midges and baetis, which is such a great sight to see after the long winter. The fishing is only going to get better until run off hits. After missing out on this early spring season/pre-run off time last year, I am looking forward to fishing baetis nymphs until the rivers swell with snow melt, and we switch to fishing junk until the waters clear. Great time to get out and do some fly fishing!<br />
