Looks like a Colorado Sucker to me. Super cool fish, and I didn't even know they lived in Deckers! I'll have to take a closer look at some of those dark shapes cruising the bottom next time I'm there...
Carp or Sucker? I have no idea, but I caught another one out of the bridge hole in Deckers on Monday. Looked like there was a pod of about 20 sitting in the hole. Hooked one in the mouth with a shot glass baetis. Thanks for the post Justin, and check out my posts on my fly box for more pictures! Thanks.
What you have there is what we would have called a Race Horse Sucker back in the old days.... Can't give you the exact sub species, but on more than one occasion I've gotten into one of those things and had it give me a heck of a fight! The reason that they were podded up is they breed in that late May, early June period and a lot of times you'll take some really nice trout laying to the rear of the pod as they hold there and suck in eggs that are drifting down river. Always a good time to have the secret little box in the back of your vest with some small, light orange egg patterns hidden away!
Midgeman, Thanks for the info. I've been asking people about this fish with little luck, and you're even finally shed some light for me. The last time I fished Deckers, I was fishing the Bridge Hole, and there was a pod of about 20 suckers hunkered down deep. I was drifting little red midges and Shot Glass Baetis through them, and hooking trout after trout at the end of the run. I even managed to hook a few of the suckers. One of them took me all the way below the bridge. Thought I was going to break my rod trying to get through there, but I managed to land him.
Here to take him...
